What is Maharashtra Day?
Maharashtra Day, celebrated on the 1st of May, is an occasion to honour and remember all the freedom fighters and individuals who fought, to transform Maharashtra into an independent state.
The story dates back to the British era when parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Southern India formed a single long region called ‘Bombay Presidency’ which was controlled by the Britishers. Maharashtra was a state of the working class- Maharashtrians. However, as Mumbai grew exponentially, a lot of traders & businessmen originating from Gujarat and Southern India, started entering Maharashtra.
To protect the roots and soil of the working class, individuals protested all around the state demanding for an independent state. And on the 1st of May 1960 is when Maharashtra was declared an independent state. This day is also celebrated to appreciate and honour all those working-class labourers who fought and lost their lives during the protests!
What is International Labour Day?
International Labour Day, also known as May Day, is celebrated on May 1st every year to recognize the contributions of workers and their struggles for better working conditions and labour rights. The day is a public holiday in many countries around the world.
The origins of International Labour Day can be traced back to the labour movement in the United States in the late 19th century, where workers fought for an eight-hour workday and better working conditions. On May 1, 1886, workers across the country went on a general strike, demanding an eight-hour workday.
In 1889, the International Socialist Congress declared May 1 as International Labour Day to continue the struggle for better working conditions and labour rights.
